In 2019, just before the world was upended by the pandemic, I found myself in Seoul, amidst a city grappling with political protests and a sense of national unrest. The streets were alive with the energy of those fighting for change, and the atmosphere felt charged with activism and the desire for progress. 

Despite the turbulence, Seoul’s vibrant districts, like Hongdae, offered a surprising sense of normalcy filled with the youth of the city who represent the evolution of the Korean identity into one focused on global citizenship. 

I documented this contrast, capturing the spirited Halloween celebrations where young people embraced joy and community, even in the face of uncertainty. The celebrations in Hongdae felt like a brief escape for many, a collective exhale from the weight of political tension, as people moved through the night savoring the moment with friends.

Another part of Seoul that left a deep impression on me was Myeongdong, where I immersed myself in the bustling night street food market. The environment of the community sharing their take on international cuisine fused with traditional Korean street food filled the air with stunning aromas and a sense of excitement. The neon lights of surrounding shops and restaurants illuminated the faces of locals and tourists alike. 

The market felt like a microcosm of Seoul itself, vibrant, dynamic, and filled with moments of human connection and shared experience for the locals and those from around the world. It was an amazing experience to be able to take in all that was around me as someone who is passionate about street food and street communities.

Despite the political turmoil just a few miles away, the street food scene in Myeongdong carried a sense of units and tradition, offering a space where people could gather, enjoy the simple pleasures of life, and forget the world’s complexities, if only for a moment. It was another example of how, even in turbulent times, life in Seoul marched forward, celebrating resilience, connection, and joy.
